    Abstract One of the promises of the Semantic Web is to support applications that easily and seamlessly deal with heterogeneous data. Most data on the Web, however, is in the Extensible Markup Language (XML) format, but using XML requires applications to understand the format of each data source that they access. To achieve the benefits of the Semantic Web involves transforming XML into the Semantic Web language, OWL (Ontology Web Language), a process that generally has manual or only semi-automatic components. In this paper we present a set of patterns that enable the direct, automatic transformation from XML Schema into OWL allowing the integration of much XML data in the Semantic Web. We focus on an advanced logical representation of XML Schema components and present an implementation, including a comparison with related work. BibTeX

    Abstract An increasing amount of personal data is automatically gathered and stored on servers by administrations, hospitals, insurance companies, etc. Citizen themselves often count on internet companies to store their data and make them reliable and highly available through the internet. However, these benefits must be weighed against privacy risks incurred by centralization. This paper suggests a radically different way of considering the management of personal data. It builds upon the emergence of new portable and secure devices combining the security of smart cards and the storage capacity of NAND Flash chips. By embedding a full-fledged Personal Data Server in such devices, user control of how her sensitive data is shared by others (by whom, for how long, according to which rule, for which purpose) can be fully reestablished and convincingly enforced. To give sense to this vision, Personal Data Servers must be able to interoperate with external servers and must provide traditional database services like durability, availability, query facilities, transactions. This paper proposes an initial design for the Personal Data Server approach, identifies the main technical challenges associated with it and sketches preliminary solutions.     Abstract {Un nombre croissant d'études mettent en évidence l'échec des serveurs de bases de données à sauvegarder réellement le caractère privé des données confidentielles. Sans même considérer les attaques, internes ou externes, de simples négligences mènent souvent à des dévoilement massifs de données. Un nouveau type de dispositifs, appelés Secure Portable Token (SPT), combinant la sécurité d'une carte à puce avec les capacités de stockage FLASH, autorise et rend crédibles des alternatives à la centralisation systématique des données personnelles. Chacun peut stocker ses données personnelles (e.g., son dossier médical) dans son propre SPT sous son contrôle et ne jamais les dévoiler en clair au monde extérieur. Cependant, cette nouvelle gestion des données personnelles entre en conflit avec les outils d'aide à la décision qui supposent habituellement une certaine centralisation des données. Cet article adresse précisément ce problème en proposant d'adapter le modèle traditionnel de publication de données anonymisées (Privacy-Preserving Data Publishing - PPDP) à un environnement constitué d'un grand nombre de SPTs sécurisés, se connectant rarement à une infrastructure disponible mais non digne de confiance.     Abstract In this paper, we propose a simple generic model to manage time series. A time series is composed of a calendar with a typed value for each calendar entry. Although the model could support any kind of XML typed values, in this paper we focus on real numbers, which are the usual application. We define basic vector space operations (plus, minus, scale), and also relational-like and application oriented operators to manage time series. We show the interest of this generic model on two applications: (i) a stock investment helper; (ii) an ecological transport management system. Stock investment requires window-based operations while trip management requires complex queries. The model has been implemented and tested in PHP, Java, and XQuery. We show benchmark results illustrating that the computing of 5000 series of over 100.000 entries in length – common requirements for both applications – is difficult on classical centralized PCs. In order to serve a community of users sharing time series, we propose a P2P implementation of time series by dividing them in segments and providing optimized algorithms for operator expression computation.     Abstract In this paper, we discuss the available approches of the new governance structures of standardization, in order to propose new hypothesis on the way computer sciences languages are dealt with. We consider the example of the XML language and its applications in order to propose a dynamic analysis of this governance, focusing on the coordination that is done by companies, and the strategic usage they have of these arenas to further their goals. We advocate the development of more of such empirical analysis in order to cover all the perspectives of possible international policies in this area. URL BibTeX
